HOP RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS
(BOILING HOPS MADE EASY)
A lot of books / recipes tend to make boiling hops sound complicated.
Some might read :
Boil bittering hops for 60 minutes.
Add flavoring hops 15 minutes before the end of the boil.
Add aroma hops 5 minutes before the end of the boil.
Or, it might be confusingly stated as:
bittering hops 60 minutes,
flavoring hops 15 minutes,
aroma hops 5 minutes.
New brewers often tend to add all the times together, as 60 + 15 + 5 = 1 hr.
& 20 minutes, but that is NOT what was meant.
A
TYPICAL HOP BOILING SCHEDULE WOULD BE: |
Bittering hops for 60 minutes.
So we would add the bittering hops to the boiling wort.
As an example, we added the hops when the clock read one o'clock. 60
minutes later or two o'clock, the boil will be over. |

|
Flavoring hops for 15 minutes.
So we would add the flavoring hops to the boiling wort at 15
minutes before the end of the boil, so we add them at 15 before two o'clock. |

|
Aroma hops for 5 minutes
So we would add the aroma hops to the boiling wort at 5 minutes
before the end of the boil, so we add them at 5 before two o'clock. |

|
At Two O'clock
the bittering hop has boiled 60 minutes,
the flavoring hop has boiled 15 minutes,
the aroma hop has boiled 5 minutes, and
you have boiled the hops the correct length of time. |
